PROPER COLD WEATHER CARE OF NEW CONCRETE

PROPER COLD WEATHER CARE OF NEW CONCRETE

  1. DO NOT SALT CONCRETE WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR OF PLACEMENT
  • Salt promotes additional freeze/thaw cycles which can lead to the damage of new concrete.
  1. DO NOT USE DE-ICER ON CONCRETE WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR OF PLACEMENT
  • Never use de-icers with ammonium sulfate or ammonium nitrate! These two compounds trigger a chemical reaction that breaks down and damages concrete surfaces.
  1. USE SAND OR SMALL ROCK TO AID IN SLIP RESISTANCE
  • Promptly remove snow and ice while making sure to broom/wash off areas where de-icing salts may have fallen.

ONGOING MAINTENANCE OF CONCRETE

  1. CONSIDER RESEALING HIGH TRAFFIC AREAS EVERY FIVE YEARS
  • Fowler & Hammer, Inc. recommends silane or siloxane based breathable sealants. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for frequency and proper application procedures.
